Happiness is a choice. We live in a toxic world, but it’s up to you to protect your vibe from the negative energy around you. And most importantly, you have to crush the negativity that lives within you.
We’re at the end of another decade. I don’t know about you, but I hope the next one is a lot better than this one was. In the 2010s, I accomplished a lot, but I battled many things as well. 95 percent of the battles I fought were internal battles. Little wars inside my head with negativity used as ammo.
2019 was not struggle-free, but it was the first year I felt like I had a solid grip on my identity. I finally felt like I knew who I was. I respected and loved myself for the first time in ages. I got my energy in balance, and I surrounded myself with positivity.
The most important lesson I’ve learned in this decade is that happiness is a mindset. You can choose to be happy. Sometimes, it requires making lifestyle changes or removing certain people from your life. I believe that everyone has the potential to live a happy life. It’s not always easy to make the changes necessary to find happiness, but it is possible.
In 2020, let’s embrace positivity, let go of negativity, and FINALLY choose happiness for ourselves.
Here are 12 steps you should take to protect your vibe in 2020:
1. Conquer self-doubt.
Energy doesn’t just surround you—it flows within you. That means you will need to vanquish the negative energy inside of you to be happy and abundant. Self-doubt is the enemy of progress. It will prevent you from following your dreams, working toward your goals, and achieving your full potential.
To be happy and successful in 2020, the #1 thing you need to do is conquer self-doubt. Don’t let a lack of confidence prevent you from doing the things you want to do with your life.
2. Be less judgmental of others.
By judging others, you will become more judgmental of yourself. Being overly critical of yourself will prevent you from being happy. Instead, you should strive to be understanding, supportive, and encouraging of yourself and other people. The next time you catch yourself judging others, remember that you do not know everything about those people or what they are going through.
Instead, focus on yourself. Don’t worry about what other people are doing. Work on cultivating positivity from within.
3. Spend more time by yourself.
If you’re an extrovert, you might enjoy being around other people, and that’s great. I’m not telling you to stop doing that. But it’s important to remember that the people you surround yourself with do have an impact on your vibration. When people bring negative energy around, you might find more peace and happiness in being alone.
Regardless of whether you’re extroverted or introverted, I think you should cherish time alone—every once in a while, at the very least. It will give you a break from the rest of the world, and you will have full control of the vibes that surround you.
4. Cut toxic people out of your life.
Leave toxic people in 2019! You should be selective when choosing people to be a part of your life. Not everyone is going to bring positivity into your world.
It is not always easy to cut someone off, especially if the toxic person is in your family. If you can’t completely remove toxic people from your life, try to limit contact with them as much as you can. You will feel happier, and you won’t have to deal with the negativity as often.

5. Practice positive self-talk daily.
2020 is the year to silence your inner critic and be kind to yourself instead.
Excessive self-criticism will kill your confidence and rob you of mental strength. Positive self-talk is one way to shift into a better mindset and strive to improve in self-loving ways
Here are some ways you can stifle negative thoughts and encourage positive self-talk:
- Question the validity of all negative self-talk. (You’ll find that most, if not all, of it is untrue!)
- Use positive language. Turn every “I can’t” statement into an “I can” statement.
- Try to find something positive in every situation, and focus on that instead of thinking negative thoughts.
- Instead of fixating your mind on the problems you have, find opportunities for growth within them.
- Identify triggers for negative thoughts so you can avoid them.
- Give yourself time. A whole mindset shift won’t happen overnight. but a little progress every day will eventually add up to amazing results.
- Plan for positivity, and practice positive self-talk in advance.
6. Accept the things you can’t change.
I’m all for self-improvement, but some things can’t (or shouldn’t) be changed. If you have a flaw that you can’t do anything about, learn to accept and love it. Your flaws make you unique!
Remember that you are deserving of love, and you should start by loving yourself just the way you are.
7. Don’t let petty things stress you out.
I’m sure you’ve heard the saying, “If something won’t matter in 5 years, don’t waste more than 5 minutes worrying about it now.”
Cliché, but true. Worry is a wasted emotion, especially if it’s over something insignificant—or over something you can’t do anything about. If you get stressed out over every little thing, you’ll never catch a break.
The next time you feel stressed, take a deep breath and tell yourself it’s going to be OK. Ask yourself if what you’re worried about is really going to matter that much in the end. If not, just relax!
8. Let go of people pleasing tendencies.
Or, let me put it this way: please yourself before you please other people. As a compassionate person, it’s natural to want to help and support others. However, it should never come at the expense of your happiness and wellbeing.
2020 is the year to put yourself first more often. Set healthy boundaries with the people in your life. Always make time for yourself, and create a safe space for your positive energy to thrive.
9. Use creativity to soothe negative emotions.
Creative hobbies and passion projects are some of the best stress relievers. If you need a break from your job or the chaos of the outside world, find something creative you can do in your spare time. It could be drawing, music, dance, or anything you enjoy.
Creativity unlocks a side of your brain that you wouldn’t normally use, especially if your job doesn’t require a lot of abstract thinking. Even if you aren’t the artistic type, a creative hobby will help you feel more balanced, and it will give you a healthy way to soothe negative emotions.
10. Take time to appreciate the little things.
Once again, happiness is a mindset. It’s all about how you view the world around you. You can choose to see the negativity, or you can focus on the positive aspects of life.
Even when things get really bad, you can always find something uplifting to focus on. You will feel happier when you take time to appreciate the little pleasures in life—blooming flowers, the warmth of sheets fresh out of the dryer, or when your favorite song comes on the radio. Your darkest days won’t seem quite so bad if you choose to focus on the light.
11. Enjoy a digital detox every once in a while.
Sometimes, you just need a break from technology. Staring at glass screens 24/7 isn’t good for your eyes, brain, or soul. Use your next day off to go on a hike, head to the beach, or take a day trip somewhere instead of scrolling through Instagram for hours.
The Internet and social media are noisy, busy places, like digital versions of a really big city. Some of the noise is positive, but not all of it is. There’s plenty of negativity sprinkled throughout the digital world. You need to take a break every once in a while to protect your vibe. After all, the real world doesn’t exist behind a screen.
12. Only do things that feel right to you.
At the end of the day, only you know what is best for you. You can’t let someone else tell you what to do, where to go, or how to live.
If you are in a situation that makes you uncomfortable, leave it. If someone is trying to force you to do something you don’t want to do, don’t do it. Intuition is powerful, and it will guide you in the right direction in life.
Protecting your vibe means doing the things that seem right to you, going places that feel like home, and living a life that makes you happy. Don’t let outside influences have a negative impact on your vibration.
